OCTOBER 2015
BIRTHDAY & HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS AND TREATS:
Here at Live Oak birthdays are given great importance. Each classroom has their own way of celebrating each child’s special day. These celebrations may include being the child of the day, teacher’s special helper, birthday wishes, birthday song, birthday pencil, birthday cards from classmates, etc. Occasionally parents will bring treats to their child’s classroom to celebrate birthdays for the end of day. Due to our district wide commitment to healthy food choices, the following food choices and procedures for bringing birthday food items to the classroom are as follows:
--- Please let your child’s teacher know, at least one day in advance, if you will be bringing a food item to the classroom to celebrate a birthday.
--- Food items to celebrate birthdays should honor the Live Oak School District’s Wellness Policy and have minimal sugar and low sodium content.
---Examples of food items that are acceptable include: Vegetable/Cheese trays, fruit trays, mini smoothies, popcorn, crackers, etc. I am sure that you have many more ideas that can be added to the healthy treat list.

Please feel free to check in with your child’s teacher for additional clarification and ideas.
--- Do not bring cupcakes, cakes, any homemade treats or other sugary desserts as birthday celebration treats. If these items are brought to the classroom, they will not be distributed.

NUTRITION:
Our scratch kitchen in the district seeks to balance exceptional nutrition with quality treats. As a school district we are committed to honoring the wellness policy of healthy choices in all snacks and meals. Please do not send the following items to school for snack or lunch: Candy or Candy Bars, Hot Cheetos, Sodas, Cupcakes, Cakes, etc.

MARCH 2016
March is ‘Youth Art Month’ and we have gotten off to a great start this month celebrating arts at Live Oak with our Family Arts Night and having Shoreline Band performing for us. We will be finishing off this month with a dance performance by our 2nd & 3rd graders on March 31 in their ‘Dance Around the World’ performances (1:00pm & 6:00pm for families). Our students were guided through this program with world famous Tandy Beal and her group. This will surely be a special performance.

We encourage you to support your child’s creativity beyond the month of March. Art and Creativity have been proven to be beneficial to learning, the more we can do to help our children learn the more successful they will be. Please take advantage of our wonderful free museums (many offer free days throughout the year), art programs at our local libraries and the fun and creativity that can be shared at home.
