Change for Good Murals
The UCSC Change 4 Good Program has painted 3 beautiful but distinctly different murals at our school. Each mural has taken about 2-3 years to complete. The process from start to finish is long because of the research done before, during, and after each one. About twenty 4th & 5th grade students are in the program each year. They are recruited as 4th graders and spend two years in the program. These students volunteer to learn about action research and they collect data from our school & school community that leads to the development of the themes painted in each mural. Students learn about the scientific method and social science methods including choosing research questions, conducting interviews, as well as collecting and analyzing data from surveys. They lead focus group meetings, work in collaborative groups, and finally paint the mural. The mural is painted during the three week Change 4 Good summer program.
CHANGE FOR GOOD MURAL #2 - COMPLETED 2012
Professor Langhout oversees all this work. UCSC students in her CPRAT class actually become mentors for the elementary school students. This has been a powerful collaboration because students begin to feel connected to UCSC through these students. In addition, each year they get to take a field trip to the university. Many students talk about going to college there after their experience in the program. Since Live Oak School has a diverse population of about 65% Hispanic students and 78% low socio-economic level students, this program is a wonderful opportunity for them to be challenged and to grow in new ways.
